Better DnD Beyond Search · last updated 27 August 2026
Better DnD Beyond Search is a Chrome extension that searches the spells, feats, and equipment your D&D Beyond account can see. It has no server and no account. Nothing it reads or stores is sent to the developer or to anyone else.
What it stores, and where
Chrome holds all of this on your own machine, in the extension's own storage:
- A search index — the names and structured fields of the spells, feats, and equipment your account can open, plus about 200 characters of description for each. It is downloaded once from D&D Beyond's own endpoints and refreshed about once a month. Because it holds what your account can reach, it reflects which books you own.
- One diagnostic record, written only when D&D Beyond returns something the extension cannot read. It holds the address that answered, what was expected, what arrived, and the time. The extension's settings page shows it to you and gives you a button to copy it. Nothing sends it anywhere. If you paste it into an email to the developer, you are the one sending it.
- Two short-lived values that let one browser session know a download has already run. Chrome discards them when you close the browser.
What it sends, and to whom
The extension makes requests to D&D Beyond and to nowhere else:
-
auth-service.dndbeyond.com— exchanges your existing D&D Beyond session for a short-lived access token. The token is held in memory and goes away with the page. www.dndbeyond.com— reads which campaigns you are in, so content your DM shares is included.-
character-service.dndbeyond.com— fetches the spells, feats, and equipment your account can open.
Your browser attaches your existing D&D Beyond session to these requests. The extension does not ask for the cookies permission and never reads a cookie.
There is no analytics, no crash reporting, and no server run by the developer. What you type in the search box never leaves your machine: searching runs against the copy already stored.
What it never does
- Sell or pass on your data. There is nobody to pass it to.
- Use your data for anything but searching D&D Beyond and opening the page you picked.
- Run on any site other than
dndbeyond.com.
Removing the data
Uninstalling the extension deletes everything it stored. Choosing Sync now on the settings page replaces the search index rather than adding to it, and the copy it replaces is not kept.
